چکیده

Note: Ten chapters were prepared as background for the work of the Maize Advisory Group and for input to the public symposium, held 11 March 2004, in Oaxaca as part of the CEC Article 13 study on maize and biodiversity. These chapters were later reviewed and revised prior to this release, based on comments received at the symposium and during the subsequent comment period. Responses to reviewers are provided at .

Pollen-Mediated Gene Flow in Maize: Implications for Isolation Requirements and Coexistence in Mexico, the Center of Origin of Maize

Mexico, the center of origin of maize (Zea mays L.), has taken actions to preserve the identity and diversity of maize landraces and wild relatives. Historically, spatial isolation has been used in seed production to maintain seed purity. Spatial isolation can also be a key component for a strategy to minimize pollen-mediated gene flow in Mexico between transgenic maize and sexually compatible ...

Crop Domestication: A Sneak-Peek into the Midpoint of Maize Evolution

In a new study, DNA from a 5,310-year-old corn cob found in the Tehuacán Valley in Mexico was sequenced and compared to modern maize and its wild progenitor grasses. The sample was found to be an intermediate between modern maize and its wild relatives, suggesting a gradual, protracted domestication process.

Molecular Evidence for Gene Flow among Zea Species

mong the concerns associated with the "release" of transgenic plants into the environment is the possibility that genes transformed into a crop plant by recombinant DNA methods could spread into its wild relatives. The process of concern is introgression, the transfer of genes from one population into another via hybridization and subsequent backcrossing. If these genes confer some selective ad...

Transgenic maize and the evolution of landrace diversity in Mexico. The importance of farmers' behavior.

The discovery of transgenic products in maize (Zea mays) landraces planted by small-scale Mexican farmers (Quist and Chapela, 2001, 2002; Christou, 2002; Editorial Note, 2002) raised questions about how the commercial introduction of transgenic maize varieties might affect the traditional agricultural systems of small-scale farmers. A key concern is whether their introduction will have a delete...

Detecting (trans)gene flow to landraces in centers of crop origin: lessons from the case of maize in Mexico.

There is much discussion of the probability of transgene flow from transgenic crop varieties to landraces and wild relatives in centers of origin or diversity, and its genetic, ecological, and social consequences. Without costly research on the variables determining gene flow, research on transgene frequencies in landrace (or wild relative) populations can be valuable for understanding transgen...
